A-State Takes Home Top Honors at Red Wolves Intercollegiate

JONESBORO, Ark. (4/4/17) – Arkansas State men’s sophomore golfer Matthew Cole took home medalist honors as the Red Wolves finished in first and second place in the final team standings of the Red Wolves Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club.

A-State’s winning ‘B’ team posted a final score of 880 (+16), while the ‘A’ finished in second place with a score of 882 (+18). UT Martin and Missouri State finished in a tie for third place with scores of 890 (+26), while SIU Edwardsville rounded out the top-5 with a score of 893 (+29).

Cole, who was the only player to finish under-par for the tournament, turned in a three round total of 213 (-3) to edge Murray State’s Matt Zakutney by three strokes. Cole, a native of Fayetteville, Ark., entered the day one shot behind Zakutney, but fired a final round score of 3-under-par 71 to take the top individual title by three strokes.

Cole was joined by ‘B’ teammate Matthew Loiacano in the top-5 after the senior also turned in a final round score of 71 to finish in a tie for third place with a score round total over 1-over-par 217.

“I was a little surprised by the ‘B’ team but not because of talent or anything like that but just because it has close to three or four weeks before any of those guys have competed in a tournament,” A-State men’s golf coach Mike Hagen said. “Every guy is capable of this type of performance and it just so happened that they had it going this week.”

The ‘B’ team entered the final round with a one stroke advantage over the ‘A’ team and widened the final margin to two shots with a final round score of 291. The ‘A’ team carded a score of 292 and was led by sophomore Joel Wendin who finished in a tie for sixth place with a three-round total of 218 (+2).

Wendin was joined by freshman Nikolaj Dahl in the top-25 individual standings after he turned a total of 222 (+6) to finish in a tie for 11thplace to give the ‘B’ team three individuals in the top-15 standings.

Also finishing in the among the top-25 individuals were freshman Zan Lika Stirn, sophomore Trent Jones and junior Andrew Huseman who had three round totals of 226 (+10) to finish in a tie for 22nd.

A-State returns to action April 15-16 at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
