AState Baseball, .300 & Counting!

Baseball…a game where a seventy percent failure rate is not only accepted, it’s held in high regard. Although in its infancy; the 2014 campaign has witnessed an A State squad that has exceeded the conventional laws of the game.  Sporting a .300 team batting average and a 4-4 season mark headed into Tuesdays mid week match-up with SEMO, “offense” was clearly the calling card of a lineup that any coach would be glad to call their own. Eight of Tuesdays nine starters boast an average above the coveted .300 mark with a pair topping .400 in Matt Burgess (.419) and Ty Michelletti (.444). The teams “table setter” Zach George continued his torrid tear through the season as his 11 game hitting streak celebrated its 12th birthday…and let’s be honest…anytime you have a guy that can lead off with an average of .387… You’re doing something right.  Not only have the Red Wolves continued to barrel up opposing pitching, they’ve played a solid brand of defense. Nine games in the books…12 team errors…with 7 coming in last Sundays win over Illinois State. Now I’m no mathematician but that sounds like five miscues scattered over eight games…not to shabby in the grand scheme of things.  The ability to raise the team batting average a healthy nine points in a early season out of conference contest is a “no doubt” confidence builder.  Confidence along with those less than bashful bats will be paramount as the Red Wolves travel to Birmingham for a three game weekend set with the UAB Blazers beginning Friday night at 6 pm.  With Friday March 14 still a question mark for most…that date marks the conference opener for A State versus Arkansas Little Rock. That means there’s 9 games to fine tune and really get a feel for what this team  has under the hood.  They have a staff that has limited the free passes (2 versus SEMO)..that’s a plus.  They also have 13 players smoother than silk on the defensive side of the ball…13 .1000 fielding percentages…you can’t make this stuff up!  Quality fans also help stir the pot this season…if 202 faithful can come out versus SEMO in forty degree mostly cloudy weather …then they can come out for most anything!  Leroy “Satchel” Paige said “Don’t look back…something might be gaining on you”.  For this years Red Wolves baseball team…if they did take the time to peer over their hypothetical shoulders…the only thing they might see gaining on them is their untapped potential!  Birmingham…here comes A State! To be continued…
