AUBURN, Ala. (4/5/14) – Arkansas State University outdoor track and field added a NCAA West Regional qualifier and increased its number of individual season and personal record performances this weekend (April 4-5) at the Stanford Invitational and the Auburn Tiger Classic to highlight another productive week for the Red Wolves.

Redshirt junior Kristina Aubert registered a regional qualifying mark in the 10,000-meter run Friday (April 4) evening at the 30th annual Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif.  Aubert broke her own A-State record by clocking a 33:54.20 time at SU’s Cobb Track and Angell Field to claim third place among the event’s 39 finishers, finishing behind Ingrid Mollenkopf (33:35.93), who ran unattached, and La Verne’s Lenore Moreno (33:49.04).  Aubert’s top three time among the 2014 NCAA West Regional qualifying performances to date surpassed her previous school-best time of 34:53.51 set last spring (March 29) at the 2013 Stanford Invitational. She placed 10th in the second heat and 34th overall to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries a season ago.

“Kristina turned in an outstanding performance,” said A-State head coach Jim Patchell.  “Kristina’s time improved her personal best by over a minute and guaranteed her a spot at the (NCAA) regionals.”

Arkansas State produced a combined nine top five-place performances in the program’s first-ever appearance at the two-day Auburn Tiger Classic, which was held at the Hutsell-Rosen Track on the AU campus in Auburn, Ala.  The men’s team featured five individuals placing among the top five while four women’s athletes earned top-five recognition.

“We had a good meet,” Patchell said.  “I was pleased with everyone across the board. We had several personal bests and even more season bests. We need to carry this momentum into practice this week and continue to improve at South Alabama next Saturday.”

The Red Wolves began their Tiger Classic competition this past Friday (April 4) with a couple of notable showings.  Senior Chris Nicasio set a season best in the hammer throw with a toss of 200-00.00/60.96m to achieve second-place honors.  Sophomore Abbey Dixon’s fourth-place 17:57.95 time in the 5,000 meters represented a personal best and eclipsed her prior top time of 17:58.69 set at the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Championships.

A pair of second-place efforts were recorded by sophomore Wil Norris and freshman Roelf Pienaar.  Norris ran an 8:39.54 in the 3,000 meters while Pienaar covered a distance of 24-09.25/7.55m in the long jump.  Senior Kashef Daniel cleared the bar at 6-09.50/2.07 in the high jump to capture fourth place.  The Red Wolves’ 4×100-meter relay team of seniors Raymond Jackson and Justin Whitfield along with sophomores Jamal Jones and Tahshon Reese also placed fourth as a result of a 41.24 time.

Senior Sharika Nelvis, a two-time (2012-13) All-America outdoor performer, won the 100-meter hurdles by posting a 13.18 time.  Junior Tilda Helgesson garnered third place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by setting a personal record time of 11:08.64.  In the shot put, senior Kim Ludick-Raath’s throw of 46-00.50/14.03m was deserving of fourth place.

The Red Wolves continue their outdoor campaign next weekend on the road with the Tennessee Sea Ray Relays (April 10-12) in Knoxville, Tenn., and the South Alabama Invitational (April 11-12) in Mobile, Ala.
