MOBILE, Ala. (5/21/14) – Arkansas State sophomore first baseman Matt Burgess was honored as a First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection by CollegeSportsMadness.com that website announced Wednesday morning.
Burgess led the team with 57 runs batted in, a mark that also ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference, and was first on the team with a .319 batting average. He slugged .431 and had a .392 on-base percentage with 12 doubles with 26 walks.
The Greenbrier, Ark., native helped solidify the middle of the Red Wolves’ lineup and has batted in the No. 4 spot in the order in all but one of the game’s he played in. He started in 54 of A-State’s 55 games in 2014 and finished fourth in the league in RBIs in league games.
Nationally, Burgess’ 57 RBIs are the 13th most in the nation and his 1.06 RBIs per game average is the 15thhighest most among all Division I baseball players.
He helped Arkansas State to a sweep of Arkansas-Little Rock on the opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference play in March by knocking in the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 14th inning to propel the team in victory.
He had a season-high four RBIs against Illinois State on Feb. 23 and then matched the total at Western Kentucky on April 6. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on April 21 after batting .500 in 16 at-bats with a double, a home run and six RBIs. He hit a home run, had a .750 slugging percentage and a .619 on-base percentage on the week to be come the 21st player in program history to earn the weekly award.
