NEW ORLEANS, La. (10/13/14) – Junior quarterback Fredi Knighten of the Arkansas State University football team has picked up Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Offensive Player of the Week accolades this week (Oct. 13) after guiding the Red Wolves to their third consecutive victory and second conference win in a row as announced by the SBC this Monday (Oct. 13).
Knighten recorded 308 yards total offense and was responsible for four touchdowns in A-State’s resounding 52-10 conference road victory over Georgia State this last Saturday (Oct. 11) at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga. Knighten led the Red Wolves to a season-high 618 yards total offense, which represented the 11th most in school history.
Knighten posted over 300 yards total offense for the second consecutive game and third time this season, and his four touchdowns responsible for tied his career high. He completed 20-of-26 pass attempts without an interception for 215 yards and recorded a career-high three touchdowns. Knighten, who hails from Little Rock, Ark., also matched his season-high rushing total with 93 yards on 12 carries for a 7.8 average per attempt. His rushing total included a season-long 51-yard touchdown run which gave A-State a 38-3 early third quarter lead. Knighten’s passing total included a career-long 48-yard completion to set up the Red Wolves’ first score, which was a seven-yard scoring pass while his second touchdown pushed A-State’s lead to 24-0.
This season in six games, Knighten has thrown for 1,291 yards and seven touchdowns on 122-of-198 passing for a 61.6 completion percentage. The 5-11, 198-pound signal-caller has rushed for 333 yards on 96 carries and is averaging 3.5 yards an attempt. Knighten leads A-State in scoring this season with 42 points as a result of his seven touchdowns.
Knighten, who was selected the Athlon Sports Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week earlier this month (Oct. 5), presently ranks fourth among the conference leaders in total offense (270.7 ypg.), tied for fourth in scoring (7.0 ppg.), fifth in pass efficiency (125.0 rating), and sixth in passing yards per game (215.2 ypg.).
With the win over Georgia State, A-State improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in league play this season to date.
The Red Wolves return to the gridiron Tuesday, Oct. 21, against the UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns in Sun Belt Conference action Lafayette, La. A 7 p.m. (CT) opening kickoff is scheduled for the ESPN2 televised matchup at ULL’s Cajun Field.
