JONESBORO, Ark. (10/5/14) – Arkansas State junior quarterback Fredi Knighten has been named Athlon Sports’ Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for his performance in the Red Wolves’ 28-14 victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
Knighten recorded 355 yards total offense and was responsible for four touchdowns, both career highs, to help lead the Red Wolves to a win in their 2014 Sun Belt Conference opener. Knighten and the A-State piled a season-high 572 yards total offense, which was also the most allowed this year by a Warhawks defense that entered the game giving up an average of just 314.8 yards per game to rank 22nd in the nation in total defense.
The Little Rock, Ark. native posted over 300 yards total offense for the second time this season and his four touchdowns responsible for tied the second most by a Sun Belt Conference player this year. Included in his offensive numbers were a career-high 284 passing yards and another 71 on the ground.
Knighten completed 21-of-37 passes and threw his fourth touchdown of the season, giving him seven for his career. He also posted a career-high three rushing touchdowns covering 29, 12 and three yards.
His first rushing score gave A-State a 7-0 lead and his passing touchdown that covered 12 yards put the Red Wolves ahead 14-0. Responsible for all four A-State touchdowns, his third put the Red Wolves’ lead at 21-7 in the fourth quarter after ULM had pulled within seven points.
Arkansas State, which won its second consecutive game to improve to 3-2 on the season, continues Sun Belt Conference play Saturday, Oct. 11, at Georgia State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT).
