MEMPHIS, Tenn. (8/31/14) – The Arkansas State University men’s cross country team began its 2014 season with a fifth-place performance at the 12th Annual BROOKS Memphis Twilight Classic late Saturday (Aug. 30) night in Memphis, Tenn.
The Red Wolves recorded 143 points to claim fifth in the 12-team field. Ole Miss and Mississippi State shared first place with 49 points apiece followed by Central Arkansas with a third-place 72 points total. Memphis placed fourth by chalking up a 101 team score.
Junior Wil Norris was A-State’s top finisher with a time of 20:33.98 to take eighth place. Junior Lance Beckman posted a 21:24.93 time for 33rd place and sophomore Zach VanGundy finished one place behind Beckman, earning 34th overall with a time of 21:26.19 among 129 participants on the four mile Mike Rose Complex course.
Freshman Josh Wojciechowski ran a 21:46.30 time in his collegiate debut to place 41st and sophomore Mark Talarico crossed the finish line in 55th place following a 22:16.12 time.
Arkansas State will have a week off before taking part in the Saint Louis Big River Festival meet Friday, Sept. 12, at St. Louis, Mo. The 6K men’s race is slated to get underway at 5:15 p.m. (CT) on the Central Fields Forest Park course with Saint Louis University hosting the meet.
