JONESBORO, Ark. (9/21/14) – Carmen Simon scored a pair of goals and Ava Abner added two of her own as the Arkansas State women’s soccer team had its largest single-game scoring output since 2004 in an 8-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the A-State Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
Simon, a freshman from Azagra Spain, scored the final two goals of the match in the 62nd and 83rd minutes to cap an impressive day for the A-State (3-6) offensive attack. Both of Simon’s goals were setup by perfect passes in the box by Abner and Jenna Duerst and the freshman was able to field the ball cleanly and send a strike by the goalkeeper for each goal.
Abner also scored a pair of goals for the Red Wolves less than a minute apart. Her first in the 37th minute redirected off a UAPB defender’s foot and into the Golden Lions own net for the score. Abner struck again 40 seconds later on a pass from Simon into the 18-yard box that gave Abner a one-on-one shot at the goalkeeper.
Sutton Wester and Nina Simon posted their first career points in the 49th minute when Wester headed a ball in off a corner kick from Simon to make a 5-0 lead for A-State. Crystal Zeledon made it a six goal advantage in the 61stminute after collected a rebound off the crossbar and send one by the UAPB goalkeeper.
A-State outshot the Golden Lions 28-1 and had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge played 18 different players and all 18 played at least 29 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Amanda Lee played the first half in goal, but did not face a shot while freshman Alexis Philippe played the entire second half. Wester earned her first start of the season and played all 90 minutes while Duerst tallied 80 minutes.
Duerst also connected on A-State’s first goal of the match in the 11th minute on an assist from senior Jordan Adams, while Adams scored in the 27th minute on an assist by Duerst.
The eight goals were the most since the Red Wolves defeated the Golden Lions by the same score in 2004. The eight goals are tied for the third most in a single game in school history, while the 28 shots attempted are tied for the sixth most in school history.
