Arkansas State has targeted a young man that can anchor their defensive line as a strongside defensive end in 3* SDE Demerick Gary. Gary will be one of the top targets for Arkansas State. Look for Gary to be an impact player if he comes to Arkansas State similar to what Javon Jones has been able to accomplish.
Demerick is a 245 pound monster at DE. He stands 6’3” and plays football out of Dallas, Texas. Demerick is currently holding offers from multiple schools and most recently picked up an SMU and Texas State offer. Schools such as UTSA, Texas Tech, Iowa State, Rice, U of H, Army and many more are recruiting him very hard right now. He says most schools are looking at him to play defensive end, but some schools are saying that they would want him to put some weight on to kick inside to the tackle position.
Currently, Demerick has visits set up to Rice next weekend, U of H on the 28th, and will visit Texas State in April to go to their spring game. He said he will definitely be at Arkansas State again either this spring or summer. He will start setting up official visits this fall and is looking for somewhere that wants him to come in and play. He wants to go to a team that needs him and that he has a good chance to play and get on the field. He wants somewhere he feels comfortable being for the next 4-5 years and is looking for a family environment in the team that he chooses. He wants to make sure the school is a place where the coaches care more than just about football. Demerick says he wants somewhere where the team has some fun.
So what kind of student athlete would Demerick Gary be? How about one that has been getting offers from Ivy League schools? Brown University and Harvard have been recruiting Gary very hard. Currently, Demerick is in the top 10% of his class with a 3.3 gpa. He will be taking the SAT and ACT very soon in April and would have already done so if the weather hadn’t caused it to be delayed.
Currently Demerick is being recruited by Coach Allen Johnson. Gary says Johnson is a real cool guy and they can talk about anything, not just football. He says Johnson can always answer his questions and has been on him since sophomore year. He also says that Johnson is someone his family really likes and his family liking the coaching staff is very important to him.
As of now, Demerick has no timetable on making a decision. He’s going to see how his visits going this spring and summer and go from there. His expectations going forward are to go out with a bang for his last year. He wants to be a leader, be the best team member and focus on getting better and doing better for his team rather than just worrying about himself. He also says he just wants to ball out. Demerick says the school he chooses should expect someone who will work hard, and work to be the best he can be. He will try to be a leader no matter where he goes.
So what does all this tell you about where he stands with Arkansas State?
Demerick says Arkansas State is a real good school. He loves the coaches and all about them. He just wants to take his time on making the decision. He says his mom really likes Arkansas State and that will play a big role in his decision. He says if it was up to his mom, she would already pick Arkansas State. He says that he just wants to be sure and doesn’t want to commit to a school then have them stop recruiting him so hard. He wants to go into his senior year and be able to take his official visits and have the coaches be able to come and visit him and doesn’t want any of that to stop due to committing to a school to early. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and keep in touch and bring you any breaking news regarding the big 3* SDE from Dallas, Texas who is strongly considering Arkansas State has his home for the next 4-5 years.
