A Spring Perfect Storm

Several weeks ago, we knew this……(Before April 7th) no one in Northeast Arkansas had ever heard of Nick Bhardwaj, Beyond Games and so forth…..no one had ever heard of having a bidding war on eBay just to have the chance to be a college football coach for a day…..or have they? If they did, had anybody ever notice?????

To use the catch phrase “a perfect storm”……. how all this played out over the next several weeks, the timing was impeccable and every detail was orchestrated and choreograph to perfection…

The First Phase of this project, was the initial idea of having a Coach of The Day….Coach Blake Anderson commented on they had a Coach of the Day at North Carolina and wanted to do something similar here at Arkansas State. We in media and those of you close to the school and athletics, heard of this undertaking and thought, “great idea” and …..I wouldn’t say less than stellar enthusiasm from the fan base…but it was definitely not the hot topic at the coffee shop or water cooler…..anyway, let’s move on……

Second Phase….the BID will be placed on eBay………….I’m not sure if the actual bid was placed on April 7th or 8th, that’s neither here or there…the fact that the process was proceeding. I had several emails, text messages, Facebook messages and Tweets wanting to know how this will work and what my thoughts on the amount will be….I found out that the bidding was open to anyone, anywhere…even if you had no ties to Arkansas State. The starting bid was set at $2500…..now, let the bidding begin.

Footnote here:….my comment to some of the fan base on Twitter and Facebook was in the past when we had auction off the Coach of the Day for a regular season game, they were getting anywhere from $2500 to $4000 per……keep that figure in mind

Third Phase….we wait……….several days go by and not much activity on the account. A few bids here or there…and then…..EUREKA!!!!

Phase Four….The Perfect Storm……I am friends with many of the Central Arkansas media…I just want to make that fact clear….and I’m not saying all, I’m saying “some”….a very small group of media in that area of the state was using the ASU-eBay story as back page news and giving not much love….or the lack of…sometimes, even mocking and crude remarks….so on, and so forth….even a group of folks that will remain nameless, who knows nothing of Arkansas State or Redwolves athletics were able to voice their uneducated opinions…..

Now you’ve stirred them up…..the Redwolves fan base was finally taking notice……and, the remarks and opinions of the few….didn’t last long…..actually it made them look…well….( you fill in the blank here….)

When everybody took notice and started following the story…………Shock, set in…..Why? Because, as mentioned in the previous paragraph….nationally, this story grew legs and took off in a full sprint and overnight was on every sports front page…and the bids started coming in……by Friday morning, April 11th, over 50 bids and the mark was set at $11,500. Once again, timing…timing is everything and timing is wonderful….timing levels the playing field, timing can backhand slap you…I call that Karma.

Fifth Phase…..The Dust Settles…..Clock on the wall… the clock setting at 3:15pm on Monday, April 14th and setting at 3:15, and setting at 3:15……… to me, moving to damn slow…..anticipation grew….the bidding was closing down shortly, it couldn’t get here fast enough.

When the eBay account was closed and no more bidding was accepted…..19 bidders, 59 bids and the winning amount set at $11,700…..the next Head Football Coach at Arkansas State…Nick Bhardwaj……who?

Nick Bhardwaj….25 year old entrepenuer from San Francisco, California. Nick was sincere, Nick was simplistic, Nick was “all in” on this experience.  He was, the perfect fit. He is the newest member of Red Wolf Nation….He took his responsibilities seriously and asked the right questions. In the shadows of coaching great Larry Lacewell, he stood his ground and at the end of the Spring Game, well done, Nick, well done. You made everybody’s experience, something to remember. Your experience from all of this….was priceless.

Can we capture lightning in the bottle again next spring? We have the blueprint…I see why not?
