JONESBORO, Ark. (5/11/14) – Arkansas State had three players drive in two runs apiece and the Red Wolves collected 12 singles in a 8-5 victory over Troy Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium on Senior Day.
Matt Burgess, Lucas Feddersen and Joe Schrimpf had two RBIs each and the Red Wolves took a home series from Troy for the first time in series history and took sole possession of second play in the Sun Belt Conference standings heading in the final week of the regular season.
Burgess’ RBI single off Levi Tate in the Red Wolves five-run third put A-State (29-22, 17-10 Sun Belt Conference) ahead. The sophomore first baseman went 2-for-5 and raised his batting average to a team-high .318 on the year.
Burgess, who has 21 multi-hit games, also drove in a run in the first inning on a fielder’s choice and completed the weekend with four hits and four RBIs.
The Red Wolves sent nine men to plate in the third, which included Schrimpf driving in two runs on a single and Feddersen also driving in a run. Eric Wilcoxson also scored after Tate balked with runners on the corners.
Tanner Gaines (4-0), the second of five Red Wolves pitchers, picked up the victory with two innings in relief.Colton Kibler followed with two scoreless innings and finished the series 4 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball out of the bullpen. Cody Woodhouse also tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Tyler Zuber picked up his fourth save of the season with one hit and one strikeout in the ninth.
Troy (22-29, 9-17 SBC) scored two runs off Arkansas State starter Chandler Hawkins in the first inning, but A-State countered with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning with a pair of RBI fielder choices’ by Burgess and Feddersen.
The Trojans briefly took the lead back with a run in the third inning, but A-State responded with a five run inning in the bottom of the inning and never trailed.
Zach Maggio gave the Red Wolves insurance with an RBI groundout in the eighth inning to set the final.
