JONESBORO, Ark. (3/30/14) – The Arkansas State baseball team took sole possession of second place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with a 4-1 victory over Texas State Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.

Bradley Wallace turned his best performance of the season with seven-shutout innings and Matt Burgess provided the offense with a two-run home run to lead the Red Wolves to their 10th victory in the last 13 games.

Wallace was sharp from the start and retired seven of the first hitters he faced. He was also efficient in his longest outing of the season throwing 57 of 93 pitches for strikes while issuing just one walk and striking out three. He scattered four hits across seven innings and allowed just one base runner to reach third base.

At the plate, Burgess padded the A-State (16-12, 7-2 SBC) lead with his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. Austin Baker led off the inning with a double down the right field line and Burgess followed with a mammoth shot that hit off the scoreboard in right field to push the Arkansas State lead to 3-0.

The Red Wolves got on the board in the first inning after Zach Maggio scored on the only error of the game for the Bobcats (16-11, 6-3 SBC)  on a bobbled pickoff attempt at first. Maggio, who led off the inning with a single, scored after Texas State attempted to pickoff Austin Baker at first base, but the attempt was botched after the first baseman failed to field the throw from the pitcher cleanly and Maggio scored easily for the game’s first run.

A-State added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Burgess who finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Lucas Feddersen scored on the play after reaching on an infield bunt and then stole second to move into scoring position. The junior transfer from Houston, Texas is now second on the team with seven stolen bases and ranks third in batting average at .301.

Cody Woodhouse and Morgan Croft combined to pitch the final two innings in relief to close out the win for Arkansas State. Woodhouse gave up a hit and struck out one in the eighth inning, while Croft gave up the game’s only run in ninth, but battled to get the game’s final out to secure the Red Wolves’ third SBC series victory of the year.

Stuart Levy added to his team-leading batting average with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while A-State lifted its team fielding percentage to .979 with 30 error-free innings on the weekend.

A-State will play eight out of its next nine games on the road starting Tuesday with a game at Southeast Missouri State at 6 p.m. The game can be heard on 95.3FM The Ticket/970AM KNEA or listen at
