JONESBORO, Ark. (9/30/14) – Opponents from the Big Ten and Big 12 and a pair of 20-plus win teams that competed in the 2014 postseason highlight the non-conference schedule for the Arkansas State women’s basketball team, head coach Brian Boyer announced Tuesday. The Red Wolves will play 10 non-conference games, as the Sun Belt Conference will feature 20 games in a true round robin format this season.
The season officially kicks off Nov. 14 when the Red Wolves host Jackson State (15-15 in 2013-14) as part of the WNIT Preseason Tournament. Arkansas State is guaranteed to play at least three games in the tournament and could play as many as four should the team advance to the championship game, which would bring its non-conference total to 11 games.
The tournament runs Nov. 14-23 with participating schools hosting games. Times, dates, opponents and host sites for second and third round and consolation game sites will be announced after all of the first round games have been completed on Nov. 15. After the conclusion of the tournament, the Red Wolves will have almost a full month of non-conference games starting with a matchup Christian Brothers University Nov. 29.
The Red Wolves’ start the month of December by welcoming NCAA Tournament participant Tennessee-Chattanooga to the Convocation Center. The Mocs went 29-3 a year ago, including a perfect 18-0 in the Southern Conference.
A four-game road trip through the states of Ohio, Kansas and Missouri highlight the middle part of the month that includes a game against Big 10 Conference member Ohio State on Dec. 11 followed by a trip to Allen Fieldhouse to play Kansas Dec. 14. A-State returns to the state of Ohio Dec. 17 to play Kent State followed by a trip to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State Dec. 19.
Arkansas State returns to Jonesboro to take on Florida Gulf Coast Dec. 22 at the Convocation Center. The Eagles went 26-7 last year, with 17-1 record in the Atlantic Sun Conference and earned the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by winning the conference tournament.
In addition to Christian Brothers, the Red Wolves will be playing Ohio State, Tennessee-Chattanooga and Florida Gulf Coast for the first time. It will also be the first time since 2000-01 that A-State and Kansas have played.
Before starting the regular season the Red Wolves will play a pair of home exhibition games against Truman State on Nov. 4 and Harding on Nov. 10 in the Convocation Center.
