JONESBORO, Ark. (9/22/14) – Arkansas State freshman Drew Jones (Fort Smith, Ark.) won her second Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Week award of the season, whileMarkie Schaedig (Little Rock, Ark.) earned her first career SBC Defensive Player of the Week award the league office announced Monday.
Jones led the Red Wolves with 17 kills on a .271 hitting percentage in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Georgia Southern. She also added three blocks and two digs on the defensive side during the match against Georgia Southern. She had the second most kills on the team with 22 (3.14 kills per set average) and the third highest hitting percentage on the squad (.254) over the entire weekend. She earned her first SBC Freshman of the Week award two weeks ago.
Serving as A-State’s libero, Schaedig had another fantastic weekend for the Red Wolves by registering 45 digs (6.43 digs per set) during the two opening matches of SBC action. Schaedig had 16 digs against Texas State and followed with a 29-dig performance in the A-State win over Georgia Southern. She also recorded three of A-State’s seven service aces against the Eagles. She improved her digs per set average to 6.18, a number that ranks her second in the entire nation.
Arkansas State returns to action Friday, Sept. 26, in another conference road clash against Troy.
