LOUISVILLE, Ky. (5/16/14) – Chris Nicasio and Alexandra Pevtsova of the Arkansas State University outdoor track and field team participated in the non-scoring Louisville Cardinal Twilight this Friday (May 16) at the Cardinal Park Track Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

The last-chance meet was held to provide athletes with the opportunity to achieve preliminary round qualifying standards, earning a high enough ranking on the descending order list to compete in the 2014 NCAA Division I Preliminary Rounds to be held May 29-31.

Nicasio, a senior, participated in both the hammer throw and discus events at the Cardinal Twilight.  Nicasio, who has qualified for the West Preliminaries this season, registered a 199-04.51 (60.77m) mark in the hammer throw to place sixth of 18 event participants.  He would also turn in a sixth-place showing in the discus as a result of a 159-04.98 (48.59m) distance.

Pevtsova generated a throw of 12-00.75 (3.68m) in the pole vault to finish a four-way tie for sixth-place honors.

The A-State women’s team is currently ranked 35th place with a 62.75 points total in the sixth edition of the 2014 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Team Computer Rankings, which were released Tuesday (May 13).  The Red Wolves moved up 12 places from the previous national rankings (May 6) and are listed 12th by tallying a 173.73 score in this week’s NCAA South Central Region rankings thru results of May 12.

On the men’s side, A-State climbed 33 places from the previous week into 58th place with a 38.66 team score in the national rankings.  The Red Wolves, who are coached by Jim Patchell, cracked the top 15 teams in the South Central Region this week by producing a 181.78 score.

The national team rankings are compiled by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons.  The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index showcasing the teams who have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race.  Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championship team points.  The USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings shouldn’t be referred to as a “poll” as no voting occurs during the process.
