|COURTESY: Arkansas State Jonesboro, Ark. (6/3/14) – Three Arkansas State University women’s golf signees have earned post-season accolades by All-Arkansas Preps. Olivia Loiacano has been named the 2013 All-Arkansas Prep Outstanding Girl’s Player of the Year. In addition, Sarah Childers and Kristen Garner have been named to the Team of the Year.
Loiacano finished her senior season by winning the Arkansas Girls Overall Tournament by a comfortable five-stroke margin at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Ark. She fired an even-par 72 for the event. The former Jonesboro High School standout is a 2014 signee for the Arkansas State University Women’s Golf squad.
In addition to winning the tournament, Loiacano won the conference and individual state championships and led Jonesboro High School to a runner-up finish in the 6A State Tournament.
She is the sister of former A-State women’s golfer Jennifer and current men’s golf player Matthew Loiacanoof Jonesboro. Jennifer was a four-year letterwinner for the Red Wolves. Her brother, Matthew, currently finished his freshmen year at A-State.
“I’m very proud of Olivia for receiving this award,” said Arkansas State head women’s golf coach MJ Desbiens Shaw. “Her hard work and dedication in the classroom and on the golf course has paid off. I look forward to having her on the roster this coming season, and she will be a huge asset to our women’s golf program.”
Childers is also from Jonesboro and attended Valley View High School. She has received numerous accolades, which include being an all-conference and all-state selection in four consecutive seasons. She also was selected as the Wendy’s Arkansas Female Golfer of the Year. She won the state championship her senior year at Valley View and finished 22nd at the Big “I” National Championship.
Garner is from Hot Springs, Ark., where she attended Lakeside High School. Like Childers, Garner was selected all-conference and all-state for four consecutive seasons. She won the state title her senior season, while leading Lakeside to three consecutive state championships. She was also named 2013 ASGA Junior Girls Player of the Year.
“What a great honor for Sarah Childers and Kirsten Garner for their nomination for “Team of the Year”. These two young ladies will be a great addition to our program, and I look forward to seeing their accomplishments next season,” Desbiens Shaw stated.
