MEMPHIS, Tenn. (8/31/14) – The Arkansas State University women’s cross country team started off the 2014 season on a high note as the Red Wolves finished second at the 12th Annual BROOKS Memphis Twilight Classic late Saturday (Aug. 30) evening held at the Mike Rose Complex in Memphis, Tenn.

A-State compiled 63 points to earn runner-up honors while Mississippi State claimed top place for the second straight year with 36 points in the 14-team field.  Ole Miss was third with 65 points while Memphis and Arkansas-Little Rock (UALR) completed the top five with 93 and 140 points, respectively.

Senior Rexi Parcells, a 2013 All-Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Second-Team honoree, paced the Red Wolves in the 5K race with a third-place 17:54.91 time.  Junior Abbey Dixon, who was a 2013 second-team all-league runner, finished in an 18:10.34 time to attain eighth place and freshman Arnica Zitting ended up one place in back of Dixon following as a result of an 18:33.83 time.  Senior Tilda Helgesson crossed the finish line in a time of 18:46.87 for 15th place.

Senior Chelsey Roberson clocked a 19:19.69 time to place 29th for A-State.  A pair of sophomores, Lindsey Mills and Brianne Murphy also placed in the top 60 of the 141 harriers who competed in the annual meet.  Mills generated a 57th-place 20:19.51 time and Murphy’s time of 20:24.28 proved worthy of 59th place.

A season ago, A-State totaled 62 points to tie Central Arkansas for third place at the  BROOKS Memphis Twilight Classic. The meet, which is hosted by Christian Brothers University, started in 2003 and is now one of the largest night-time cross country events in the nation.

Arkansas State, coached by Jim Patchell and Kyle Chandler, is presently ranked eighth in the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Preseason Women’s Cross Country South Central Region Rankings and was tabbed as the preseason favorite by the league coaches to win the 2014 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Championships.

A-State is now idle until Friday, Sept. 12, when the Red Wolves participate in the Saint Louis Big River Festival meet in St. Louis, Mo.  The 5K women’s race is slated to start at 4:30 p.m. (CT) and is being hosted by Saint Louis University.
